PDF Upload Guidelines (EN)

[This document in German / auf Deutsch]

PDF is a very complex format that allows you to make a wide range of settings. Therefore, it is very important to make sure that the PDF is optimized for digital publishing before you upload the PDF to the 3DZ.Cloud.

In order to make this optimization easier for you, we have compiled the following PDF guidelines for you:

Use PDFs with single pages, not spreads

The basic building blocks of a digital magazine created with 3DZ are single pages. Please save your magazine as single pages and not as spreads (no double-sided PDFs – no double pages!).

Consistent page size

Keep in mind that a magazine has a consistent page size. The PDF should therefore be portrair OR landscape format and all pages have the same dimensions.

A single PDF file

A single PDF which contains all pages is optimal. If this is not possible or too cumbersome, it is also ok to use several PDFs.

Please note: We also provide automated FTP imports via our FTP-ProductionBot. Please ask our sales team for further details. The FTP-ProductionBot also supports stitching of multiple PDFs to one issue. (In that case the all PDF files have to be compressed to a ZIP file.)

No bleed

Save your PDF without bleeds or crop marks.

Important: Removing of bleeds or crop marks afterwards (when the PDF is already in our system) will lead to the issue that the size and position of the Mediabox cannot be retrieved properly. Please avoid this.

Please use embedded fonts and no path fonts. Non-existent fonts are replaced, if possible, by standards.

Fonts with color traces can be converted into paths.

Texts: Please use embedded texts.

Password protection

Save your file as an open, editable PDF file without protection.

When choosing the resolution, you should pay attention to the two interest points of your readers: on the other hand readers would like to enjoy pictures of excellent quality, on the other hand they do not like long loading times or too high memory consumption.

The preferred optimal resolution is 200 dpi and allows for high image quality.

Color space

Convert CMYK into sRGB.

Vector Graphics

Convert high-resolution vector objects into pixels.

Reduce multiplied transparencies.
Better still: Please avoid transparencies if possible, as these usually lead to display problems (due to the necessary decomposition of the PDF).

If you are using A5 pages, scale them up to A4.

Anchor links

Create jumpmarks in Adobe InDesign with the function:
„New hyperlink“ → „Link to page / mail / URL“

Important instructions:

  • Links may not contain a line break in the PDF, since the import often involves a separation and thus an interruption of the link.
  • If links are embedded in a flow text, after the actual link, no characters such as a point can be connected directly to the link.
  • Vertical links are not recognized.
  • Umlauts in links are not recognized through.
  • Jumpers must not be anchored as they are not detected.
  • Links embedded in graphics are not recognized.

Adobe InDesign Export Options

In order to facilitate the creation of optimal PDFs, we have created Adobe InDesign presets for you.

Import of export presets

To use the export preferences in Adobe InDesign, follow these steps:

  1. Open Adobe InDesign
  2. Click on the „File“ / „Adobe PDF Presets“
  3. Select „Define“
  4. Click „Load“
  5. Select our job profile on your hard drive
  6. Click „Open“

Preferences for Acrobat 5

Note: This preference leaves all the transparencies and effects that you can create with Adobe InDesign CS 3.4 or 5 in the document. However, there are some effects and transparencies that can not be displayed correctly in the web view, they are not displayed, or displayed as a white-transparent area. To prevent this error, delete the effects, add the effects to the image, or use the Acrobat 4 Preferences options.

Preferences for Acrobat 4

Note: With these presets all effects and transparencies are included in the picture and displayed correctly. With this method, however, fine white hair lines can occur in images that contain effects or transparencies. In addition, all objects within the effect surfaces are divided into individual objects.

Note: The subdivision of the objects into individual objects affects an automatic PDF animation, if any. To group individual objects or remove them from the animation, please use our animation tool.
